Annick's Old World Coffee
Decaffeinated Coffees
No
the picture to the right is not a mistake. We were looking through
our images and this one of Humphrey, Master Roaster Timothy
Tulloch’s official mascot and lap warmer, seemed more appropriate
and definitely more interesting than a decaffeinating plant.
Humphrey is the world’s first naturally decaffeinated dog with
speeds up to 1 foot an hour.
Ok, on a more serious note: the majority of our decaffeinated
coffees are decaffeinated in Hamburg, Germany using the CO2 Water
Method, also called the Sparkling Water Process. Note: Swiss Water
Process Decafs are available. First, bean moisture levels are raised
to about 50% by soaking. Next the beans are exposed to carbon
dioxide pressurized to 300 atmospheres and heated to about 158°F.
The wet carbon dioxide then circulates through the beans dissolving
caffeine and from there, passes through a charcoal filter/extraction
vessel that traps only the caffeine. The remaining flavored charged
and caffeine-free water is then re-circulated back through the
beans. During this final step, carbon dioxide is removed and the
beans reabsorb lost flavor particles while drying. This method of
decaffeinating uses no chemicals, retains coffee flavors, and
removes the most caffeine. The only true disadvantage is there is no
plant in the U.S.A.
FYI: Presently, all decaffeinated coffees retain a minute amount
of caffeine and lose some flavor during decaffeinating process.
However, in just a couple more years, Hawaiian coffee grown without
caffeine may be available!
